When I was in the Army, we regularly engaged in training exercises to practice the procedures and tactics that we would need in a real war. And, during these exercises – these “play battles” – there would always be these fellow soldiers – they’re in every unit – who ran around like John Wayne. They were always talking tough, walking around with their chests puffed out, and yelling things like, “Let’s go – right now!” And, “I’m ready to kill a Commie for mommy,” and other such nonsense.
In Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, the fifth and final ranking is black belt. The typical time it takes to earn a black belt is 8 to 10 years. When you have earned your black belt your learning in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu truly begins. Many great masters say their journey began with a black belt and has continued as long as they have stayed faithful to the great Brazilian form of martial arts.

The white belt, which is typically the first belt given to students in the beginning, and the black belt is used to show a high level of proficiency in the system of study. In Japan, the two color belts were all that was used for many decades and only later in modern times was the color belt ranking system installed. However, even today there are many traditional schools in Japan that still use the two belt system.

Unfortunately, many martial arts students do the same thing. Regardless of rank, they run around the dojo pointing out the mistakes of others, or showing off their skills – instead of contemplating how those skills would actually fit into a real attack, against an opponent who wasn’t from your school or style.
Major styles including Taekwondo, Karate, and several others, began to use this system as well over the years.
When you hear the words black belt, what normally comes to mind is a person who has attained the highest level of competence in any of the martial arts styles such as Karate or Tae Kwon Do. The black belt usually signifies the highest level of achievement and it is the most coveted among the various martial arts belts. Anyone who is serious about becoming a practitioner would undoubtedly aspire to attain a black belt and become an expert in their field of discipline. Although there are various forms of martial arts with different belt grading system, obtaining a black belt across all platforms usually require dedication, training and skills.
