The reality is that the answer is going to be different for every person. What I will attempt to do in this article is give you a set of general guidelines. I will talk in very broad terms about different martial arts, and what to look for in a school. Ultimately every teacher, at every school, in every system is going to be completely different.

Here is a realistic way to look at combat training. Humans progress through Evolution. Right? Then why is it that most martial arts system are caught in the past?

Think about it. If I said to you that a horse was the best form of transportation because we were using it 600 years ago, you would call me an idiot. Yet, why is it that when someone who says that our system was created 600 years ago so it is the best form of self defence most people believe it?

Whether you start training with me or someone else choose a reality based training system. I teach Close  Quarter Combat a blend of the very best military, martial arts and law enforcement tactics. Realistic, logical and effective.

Isn’t it interesting that people have to be encouraged to study?

But, when I went to the Kang Duk Won, I wasn’t encouraged to study. We had four basic belts, white, green, brown and black, further delineated by stripes, and nobody much cared.

Simply, people who cared about flashy belts left the school, and only the faithful, the ones who didn’t need to be encouraged to study, were left.

Although there are many practitioners and places to learn it, there is much misinformation concerning the martial arts. The following questions deal with many of the common misperceptions concerning it, their purpose, types of it, and how it applies in real world fighting situations.

Hopefully these questions and answers will help give beginners and people interested in it a more realistic view of what the martial arts are about and how they fit into the modern world.

If martial arts instructors are so experienced, why would they want to avoid a fight?

Logically, there are more reasons to leave quietly than fight, even if you believe you have the upper hand. Unless you are in a controlled situation, you never know who you’re up against and how far they are willing to go to win the fight.

People who pick a lot of fights typically gravitate towards extremes. Generally, they think they’re really tough, that they have a lot of fight experience, or that they’ve picked up some dirty little tricks that will always turn the fight in their favor.

This may include cheap shots, but weapons are never out of the question — not to mention, their friends could intervene at anytime. Even if you “win” a fight, you may end up in court over assault charges, especially if it is known that you practice it.
