Demian Maia’s jiu-jitsu snaps Neil Magny’s seven-fight streak
The welterweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC 190 event at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.
If Magny’s chances in this fight depended on keeping the fight standing, he had reason to panic very early on. Maia took him down almost immediately, then moved to secure full mount before the first minute of the fight was even up.
To Magny’s credit, he survived several sticky situations in the first round, but he was never able to get off his back or even hit the pause button on Maia’s ceaseless attack from the top. He ended the round with his arm in danger of being snatched up and straightened out, but had the benefit of the clock to save him from that submission.
The pattern repeated itself in the second, however, with Maia taking Magny down quickly, then moving to mount before taking his back and locking up the body triangle. From there, it was only a matter of time until Maia found the grip he wanted with his forearm wrapped around Magny’s throat. As the jiu-jitsu ace squeezed, the only thing left for Magny to do was tap.
“Magny wouldn’t give me his back, but I could take him even though he’s a really tough fighter with a really hard neck,” Maia said. “I’m happy with my victory. Every fighter has an objective, but my mission is to spread Brazilian jiu-jitsu.”
